the history
From 1883-1986 The Collingwood Shipyards, formerly The Collingwood Dry Dock, was the pride of town. Renowned for its hulls, naval vessels, freighters and steamships built in the yard, the success of The Collingwood Shipyards helped forge a dynamic town. Lured by the prosperity of the Shipyards and its workers, merchants arrived, roads were created, and a thriving community established.
The launch day in Collingwood was a special festive occasion that attracted everyone from politicians to townfolk to celebrate. A special lure was the mammoth wave that swept across the harbour when the ship hit the water. As if on cue, local boys, buckets in hand, would run onto the dock to pick up the fish tossed up by the wave.
Ships and the building of them brought Collingwood civic pride and wealth. Today Collingwood's prosperity has moved to another industry: recreation. The town is recognized as being southern Ontario's most popular four seasons sports and leisure destination. The Shipyards residential community makes its own history. This development reunites the lake with the town, offering new access points and views. FRAM/Slokker are proud of this contribution to the town's fine heritage.
